BURLINGAME, CaliforniaFirstCarbon Solutions, a pioneer and industry leader in environmental business intelligence, today announced that it will work with a large metropolitan planning organization (MPO) in the state of California to conduct an energy and water usage inventory of the region. The MPO is striving to estimate energy and water supply and demand within the state as part of its planning initiatives to encourage a more sustainable California. The inventory will also be used to estimate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with energy and water use.

FirstCarbon Solutions will perform an energy and water inventory analysis of the region’s commercial, industrial and residential operations and facilities. The analysis will span from county-wide energy and emissions data reported by government agencies to data from individual residences and businesses. Data gathered will be used to model usage and consumption factors for various geographies — from county down to individual parcels where possible. The initiative will also be extremely valuable as the organization determines how best to meet SB 375 measures. The first phase of the project, the energy usage inventory, will be completed by June 30, 2011.“No matter the size of the organization or the environmental management task at hand – it all begins with the same central principle: you can’t manage what you can’t measure,” said Chet Chaffee, VP Life Cycle and GHG Carbon Activities, FirstCarbon Solutions. “Our mission is to help organizations monitor, manage and report environmental data and cost effectively manage sustainability programs.”

Pike Research, a market research and consulting firm specializing in clean technology markets, finds that organizations across all industries need to view energy and water data management as a new business necessity.

“Data management and analytics with respect to energy and water use, including carbon output, have become the new business imperative,” said Marianne Hedin, Senior Analyst, Pike Research. “Organizations from every industry are feeling increasing pressure from regulatory agencies and constituents like consumers and shareholders to provide comprehensive and reliable data about their energy and water consumption along with greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In fact, data that is inconsistent, unreliable and inaccurate can severely affect an organization’s reputation or ability to maintain its competitive advantage. The tougher regulatory environment, increasing supply chain mandates, and the need to improve or maintain brand equity, are exerting new demands that require such data to be credible and rigorous.”

Currently, FirstCarbon Solutions is compiling data from various organizations for the MPO inventory. Sources include the Department of Energy (DOE), Energy Information Administration (EIA) and the California Energy Commission (CEC), among others.
